The overall goal for the intern
The objective of a psychology-related internship as defined by HPCSA Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) The purpose of the internship is to provide students of psychology with an extensive, well-supervised experiences, which will help them acquire the required skills, knowledge and skills to practice in a professional manner and with integrity. The design of the internship is in line with the goals set by the HPCSA to ensure professional competence and compliance with the highest standards of practices.
By employing interns, we aim to:
- Enhance awareness of students and their understanding of mental health and wellbeing through the teaching of self-management skills, coping strategies and building resilience in the academic context.
- Improve student engagement and connectedness within the learning environment in order to foster the values of caring and compassion, as well as success.
Responsibilities
- Offer counseling services to learners.
- Conduct psychoeducational tests.
- Assist with crisis management of students who need help.
- Connect with the school-based support staff to ensure that students’ development with necessary support and intervention.
- Assist in the coordination and presentation of workshops that promote mental wellness.
- Keep case history records and prepare reports and statistics each month.
- Participate in supervisions and case conference.

- The ability to apply techniques and psychological models to increase the emotional capabilities of students.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the capacity to establish relationships with a range of stakeholders, such as colleagues, students, as well as parents.

Requirements
- The completion of a Master’s degree from a recognized institution in Psychology (Counselling or educational) from an accredited and recognized university.
- Affiliation to be an Psychologist Intern at HPCSA. Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) in this class (Counselling or Education).
- The proof of HPCSA Eligibility letter, or current registration for interns is required.
