NWU Job description
Purpose Of The Position:
- An academic role requiring active involvement in teaching and learning, research, and community engagement.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Teaching and Learning:
- Instructors teach English Literature modules at both postgraduate and undergraduate levels. They include the literature of early modern times as well as 19th century literature. literary Theories, African literature and contemporary literature.
- Teaching team, student evaluations, assignments, tests and exams and supervision of postgraduates
- Learn to teach various kinds of literature (poetry or fiction, drama, and film) at both the undergraduate or postgraduate level.
- Assist with administrative tasks including submitting markings and evaluating student progress.
- Create tests and exams As well as marking tests.
- Set up office hours to discuss issues with students.
- Participate in sessions (with the members of the subject group, the teaching team and/or the module’s tutors).
- Serve as a moderator convenor across each of the 3 NWU sites.
- Supervise postgraduate students.
- Moderate internal assessments.
- Maintain the records by storing the module files needed for External and Internal Programme Evaluation.
- Know well about African as well as world and contemporary writings from the Global South
2. Research:
- Contribute to the research outputs from the School of Languages.
- Participate in national and international conferences Both national and international.
- Write articles for recognized Journals.
3. Academic administration and leadership:
- Complete management tasks and perform duties as assigned by the university in any way that arises (for instance, subject chair duties; being a member of the Faculty Board or committee).
- Show good organizational and administrative abilities.
4. Community engagement:
- Participation in community involvement via CE initiatives and cooperation with other stakeholders.
5. Occupational Health and Safety:
- Work in partnership with managers, OHS officials and colleagues to assist everyone in meeting the legal requirements while keeping up with general OHS guidelines and procedures.
Professor Vacancies Requirements
- An PhD (NQF stage 10.) is required in English Literature and/or Literary Studies.
- At least six years of experience and a academic record of postgraduate and undergraduate teaching at the university levels.
- Minimum 7 (6) years of teaching experience in various types of Literature (Poetry, Drama, Fiction and Film) as well as the different genres of Literature i.e 19th Century literature, Literary Theory, Contemporary literature, African literature.
- Research involvement is active, as demonstrated by the number of published articles in reputable journals that are comparable to the academic level of an academic professor.
- Experienced in presenting posters or papers at national and/or international conferences for scholarly research.
- The applicant should be involved in community engagement initiatives.
- Experiential experience with postgraduate supervision.
- Be knowledgeable of a variety of literatures from the early modern to modern literary works i.e African, world and contemporary literary works from the Global South.
- At least 2 years of experience in leadership.
Key Functional / Technical Competencies:
- Ability to function as a part of a team and communicate well with your colleagues and fellow workers.
- Know how to make use of technology.
- Facilitation of blended learning and teaching both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels team teaching and student evaluations.
- Create course materials, assessments (formative as well as summative) and assignments.
- Assist with administrative tasks as needed Attend seminars, workshops and conferences.
- Assist in teaching undergraduate classes and in the supervision of postgraduate students.
- Fantastic English spoken and written abilities.
- High knowledge of computers and expertise in working with LMS platforms, MS Teams, Outlook, MS Office.
- Expert computer literacy, knowledge of MS office, as well as knowledge and experience using computing tools for the classroom.
- Knowledge of the literary theory and its application in English literature studies.
