Position Purpose
As per SACAA CARs 91.02.7 and 91.02.8, the Commander of an aircraft for both daytime and nighttime operations is ultimately accountable for ensuring the safety of both crew members and passengers aboard it. Assume day and night flight crew management based on SACAA regulations and TNPA SOP’s. Flight Planning, Aircraft Prep for Marine Pilot Service Flights, Port Related Functions in accordance with TNPA Requirements, SOP’s and Policies are some of the services provided. Experienced pilots must undergo experiential training that meets the standards set forth by national and international aviation regulatory authorities (skills development of Cadet Pilots and Co-Pilots). Apply the Civil Aviation regulations as well as National Ports Act No 12 of 2005 in their application of helicopter service in order to deliver high quality services while increasing port efficiency.
Position Outputs
- Planning day and night flight missions according to marine traffic demands and Port Control directives is crucial for successful marine operations and port operations.
- Prepare aircraft resources and loading schedule for marine pilot transfers as well as Port-related functions.
- Responsibility includes preflight checks and safety briefings to ensure compliance with stringent safety requirements.
- Secure transfer of marine pilots safely aboard vessels as they arrive and depart the South African Port system.
- Verify compliance with South African Civil Aviation Regulations.
- Compliance with SAMSA and National Ports Act No. 12 of 2005 should be assured.
- Evacuation of accident victims and individuals in distress.
- Flight planning entails the selection of flight routes in accordance with approved aeronautical requirements and charts.
- Liaison between Port Control and Air Traffic Navigation Services.
- Recording take-off and landing times to meet scheduling needs
- Assure customer satisfaction and optimize performance.
- Logging of operational flight times and evaluation of mission efficiencies.
- Provide a seamless, 24-hour operation to meet TNPA business goals and client needs to improve port efficiency.
- Contributing to business reputational enhancement by adhering to stringent safety requirements within the port system and minimising incidents and accidents within it.
- Ensuring prompt responses to Port Control directives will enhance ship turnaround times.
- Training and development for Day Captains, Copilots, Cadet Pilots, and other personnel in the functional area.
- Receive daily operational reports from the Day Captain.
- Conduct Operator Proficiency Checks on Day Captains, Co-Pilots and Cadet Pilots.
Qualifications and Experience
You must hold An ATPL-H (equivalent to Diploma or Degree) the Night rating and Instrument Rating Winch Rating, and Sling Rating. 2200 hours of total flight time (1200 on turbine helicopters, 700 hours on multi-engine helicopters and 250 hours on an A109 helicopters). A minimum of 5 years’ experience and familiarity with all tasks that are related to TNPA Marine Pilot Services.
