Description
This is a three-year experience of in-service training. It will lead to the qualification of Tractor Mechanic or Earthmoving Mechanic. The initial 6 months are a time for probation. The probation period serves to both the employer and employee to determine if there is a long-term partnership. Anyone can leave during the time period, without penalty. After that, the apprentice will be bound to the AFGRI contract and will begin the actual training. This includes the apprentice attending an Practical Training Institute in the various phases that are required (If necessary). The apprentice will be enrolled for the N subjects required in a college, and will also study via online learning (If required and if it is there is a need). It is expected that the apprentice take classes on Saturdays as well. The learning at a distance could continue if needed at the work. The trainee will receive product training at John Deere, other suppliers as well as internal AFGRI training delivered by specialist suppliers as well as our own specialists.
This training does not include training costs for the apprentice, if they pass however any failure in the training will must be re-done on the own cost and on their own time. The Apprenticeships are all subject to the terms of the contract. It is a three-year contract with AFGRI. If the apprentice decides to withdraw during the apprenticeship period or during the “work-back time” there will be a cost. The time and the phase of the withdrawal, costs will be determined. It is expected that the apprentice works for the duration it took him to get his qualification determined on a year-by-year basis. The contract is not able to be extended more than four years. If the apprentice hasn’t completed his or her training within four years of the start date, then their contract is over.
The duties of the Apprentice will include
- Training to become an Tractor Mechanic or Technician or Earthmoving Mechanic/ Technician
- Maintenance and repair of the related equipment
- Responsible for the control of stock
- Customer service
The minimum requirement for this application is

- Computer literacy
- N2 subjects:
- Mathematics
- Engineering Science
- Diesel Trade Theory

- Technical Drawings / Engineering
- Motor Trade Theory
- If the applicant does not possess the N2 certification, the Matric Certificate will be considered if the applicant is a student in subjects like:
