To implement outreach programs in the PWID community through providing exact health data, mobilization of PWID’s access to health services and linking to health services.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 10
Peer educators must be former or present students who have experienced or used drugs since they are a “peer” and have been through the same context, and the challenges that PWID/PWUD face. - A minimum of one year’s experience within PWID Community or PWID Community or in the role of an educator for peer groups
- Able to write and read clearly in English
- The ability to speak isiXhosa, Afrikaansand English as well as any South African language
- Criminal record clean
Duties and Responsibilities
- The distribution of harm-reduction kits and sex products that are safe
Securely removing used injecting equipment in sharps bins in outreach areas and local communities - Inform the PWID/PWUD of accurate health information. PWID/PWUD about harm reduction and safe injection practices, HIV/AIDS Hepatitis, TB, SRH and human rights
- Connect and/or refer PWID/PWUD who are living with HIV or TB for treatment to the nurse in mobile or drop in center or to the closest health facility
- It is essential that HIV positive PWID/PWUDs are regularly examined and are urged to take PrEP to use it as an HIV preventive method.
- Encourage psychological support, referral to social services, and follow-up
- Find PWID/PWUD to recruit for Opioid Substitution Therapy (OST) and meet all eligibility requirements
