Job Summary

Analyses and performs laboratory tests to provide medical practitioners with results to diagnose, treat and prevent disease

Requirement

  • Registration with HPCSA Relevant Certificate in the relevant discipline
  • 5-8 Yrs Relevant Working Experience

Job Knowledge

  • Medical terminology, anatomy and physiology relevant to pathology
  • Standard operating procedures for laboratories
  • Medical ethics guidelines in medical pathology
  • Organisational policies and procedures

Key Performance Area

  • Performs diagnostic tests, reviews, and verifies the results in order to provide any relevant information that could be related to the prevention, treatment, or diagnosis of disease.
  • Verifies and records test results under the indirect supervision of a medical technologist to ensure the integrity of the test result database in laboratory information systems.
  • Operates, calibrates and maintains the laboratory equipment to ensure it’s working efficiently and giving accurate results. This includes recording results of instrument maintenance, quality control and troubleshooting malfunctioning equipment.
  • Follows good housekeeping practices and works effectively as part of a team in order to maintain a safe work environment, according to the relevant legislation and safety protocols. This includes maintaining quality control standards and adhering to infection control procedures, disposing of bio-hazardous materials correctly, and participating (as per the delegated responsibility) in the process of preparing for internal and external audits.
  • Reads documents, performs tasks and reports incidents on the Laboratory Information Management System in accordance with relevant organisational policies.
  • Participates in trainings and seminars, and continues professional development activities (CPD), to update knowledge and skills and comply with registration requirements. It is important to ensure that records are current and can be provided immediately upon request.
  • Provides on-site instruction to laboratory staff, interns and students, as well as medical colleagues, and other health care workers, in the use of laboratory processes, systems and techniques. This is only if it has been assigned by the laboratory manager.
  • Follows professional conduct standards in accordance with the organisational policies and ethical standards of relevant professional bodies.
